Quick reminder that TESTAMENT can get pretty explicit!

Original solicitation copy for TESTAMENT #9:

“Part 2 of the 3-Part "Down to Egypt." What happens when the gods have

a plan for you, and that plan involves sleeping with someone you're trying

to avoid? The Biblical Judah found out the hard way — and so will Jake

when Dinah lures him into a sexual initiation of her own. And Pierre Fallow

and his disciple Alec plan to seduce the world's youth with a paradise

of consumerism that, like all visions of heaven, is too good to be true.”

Rushkoff’s Chapter Nine (#9) Notes are available here.

Yesterday’s Maybe Night festivities went very well indeed!

A.C.: I apologize for the holiday-delay getting this posted! Here's to the New Year!

  2. Let me try again, but maybe break it down into two parts:

Another stimulating issue where we press hot buttons to open cans of worms!

Joseph inventing the concept of debt is a great Rushkoffian trope:
"What they can't pay in labor today, they will owe in labor tomorrow."

The idea that money is lent into existence and needs to be paid back with interest, thus creating the need for an ever-expanding economy, is one of the main systemic issues Rushkoff deals with.

As it stands, people sacrifice to support this system, when really the system should be designed to serve the people. And ultimately it's a legacy system, a ghost train, it can be changed, as Bucky Fuller saw, to the advantage of all.

I wonder about the fake out gay sex scene! Are we just playing gay chicken? Or could you maybe not do a gay male sex scene in a DC/Vertigo comic in 2006?

The Globo concept is one of the main ideas I wanted to revisit in full context, because it seems to represent the logical conclusion of emerging technocracy: A social cybernetic AI crypto-currency.

A convergence of the disruptive digital tools into a singular force.

"A money finally worthy of worship."

I think we're dealing with the utopian fervor of the transhumanist vision of abundance, which effective altruism uses as justification for authoritarianism.

I agree with Kung, never surrender the concrete for the abstract!

I went through a whole manna vs money thing a while back, which turned out to be very worthwhile.

"Get tagged and you're it!" - Good "Merchants of Cool" style coercion.

  3. For the first time I found Rushkoff’s notes more confusing than illuminating, in part due to what seems to me to be mix-ups in the construction of sentences such as this one: “if a wife dies childless, her father-in-law is to offer another son for her to marry.” I guess he meant if the original husband dies, not the wife, but those Bible behaviors already are twisted enough as it is that any such phrase makes things even more convoluted.

About the gay scene, I thought it was maybe played as a joke, what with all the innuendos etc, with the punchline being something like “they were just doing naked yoga together, what did you pervs thought it was, AW AW AW.” To which I’d say, even if no actual sex is depicted, this still appears like totally gay to me. That’s of course OK, but the way it is presented I find in dubious taste.

Krishna and Astarte being a thing together was to me a funny and unexpected plot twist.

“They wrote about these girls in Wired, you know”, made me laugh.

I might want to see what happens in part 3 of this arc to have a clearer idea of what’s going on, but so far I really don’t know what to make of this sex thing between Jake and Dinah. Is it for him to stop taking sex so seriously, or on the contrary to see how powerful it can be, in some kind of tantric-ish context? And if 'love' doesn't have much to do with sex, why is Dinah continually and consistently so bent on banging this whiny boy?

    1. I had a similar thought about the Jake/Dinah love vs. sex thing, though something in what I said seems to be triggering an auto comment deletion in blogger!

    2. The way these things work appears inscrutable, but Apuleius should be able to somehow retrieve your disappearing comment, he did so for me several times in the past.

    3. Nothing of any particular value was lost, but for the life of me I can't figure out what triggered it!
